In attendance with Noise and Vibration Solutions (NVS),
Recently appointed HCA Director’s, Gill and Leah, attended Birmingham Airport (BHX) to promote as part of UK Airports Safety Week to champion occupational health and safety across the industry. What a brilliant and lively day it turned out to be!
We set up our stall in partnership with Noise & Vibration Solutions UK Ltd, who generously supported the day (including accommodation) and provided some excellent Loop ear plugs in carry cases as giveaways. One of the most popular activities was to guess how many hearing protectors were packed into the jar — people had fun trying to guess the exact number inside, with a chance to win a pair of Loop ear plugs. It created a brilliant buzz and got loads of people chatting and coming over.

We provided some really engaging, hands-on demonstrations – The engineers threw themselves into it with great energy. Several of them navigated to sampling the generic active hearing device and were genuinely excited about how it performed in practice. They told us these would be really useful in their day-to-day roles because they give them greater autonomy when dealing with intermittent noise. Instead of constantly removing and replacing ear protection, they could hear what they needed to while still being properly safeguarded during louder bursts from aircraft or machinery.
One of the highlights was an honest chat with one of the engineers. He admitted he thought the company had downgraded his PPE specification because he could suddenly hear some ambient noise. He didn’t realise he could be overprotected by his previous equipment and we explained that his ambient environmental noise is crucial for detection as that secures overall personal safety. Moments like that show exactly why these awareness sessions are so valuable. Likewise, when people understand the why, they’re much more likely to use it properly and look after their long-term health.

The session focused on well-being at work, particularly around exposure and the realities of occupational noise. The team shared how their exposure tends to be intermittent – depending on the task, plus the bursts of aircraft noise during landing. They were genuinely engaged and appreciated the practical guidance on getting the right level of protection.
It was fantastic to spend time with the airport community, answer questions, share a few laughs, and help raise awareness around safety practices that make a real difference to people’s daily working lives.
Days like this prove that the best learning often happens through hands-on experiences and open conversations.
